A cult classic, "The Rocky Horror Show" fits right in with the new ethos brought by the Woodlawn Theater's new owners and brings loyal members of the audience back for multiple turns.
The Woodlawn directors feel fortunate to have three stars from the TV show "RuPaul’s Drag Race" leading the cast. Alaska, from season 5 of the show, said in most shows audience-delivered comedy would not be allowed, but is it welcomed in Rocky Horror.
"They know what lines are coming up, so they can scream at you," Alaska said.
The Woodlawn’s production is a take-off on the original rock musical from 1973 that had an extended run overseas and then in the U.S. Woodlawn director Greg Hinojosa said the adult-themed stage show has a lot of fans in San Antonio.
"Its production is very well known and obviously it's an iconic home and its got a large cult following," Hinojosa said. "And when Alaska says that everyone knows the call backs it's because it has been seen across the country so many times."
"The Rocky Horror Show" runs through the first weekend in November, and it comes with its own instructions for audience participation, posted on the Woodlawn’s website, woodlawntheatre.org.
