World Music Celebrations: St. Patrick's Day

Mar 15, 2013

Each week on World Music (Saturday nights from 8-10 on KSTX 89.1 FM), I take a look at celebrations happening around the world. This weekend, St. Patrick's Day is celebrated not just in Ireland, but now around the world.

St. Patrick’s Day in Dublin, Ireland couldn’t contain itself; it just kept getting bigger and bigger so now it’s called The St. Pats Festival. People flood into Dublin for the festivities, which last five days. This is a situation that no one objects to -- certainly not the Irish Tourist Board! There is a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere that permeates the whole event, which at one time was a strictly religious holiday.

The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in Boston and the second, some years later, was in New York. Today, there is a huge representation of Irish Americans involved in the march down O‘Connell Street in Dublin. Even though the color associated with St. Patrick is blue, green is the color of Ireland, and never more so than on March 17th.

You can hear more about this and other celebrations happening around the world this and every Saturday on World Music with Deirdre Saravia, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on KSTX 89.1 FM.
