Monday, May 5, Cinco de Mayo

Alida Metcalf, professor of history, and Michelle Millet, assistant professor in the Coates Library, will discuss how faculty, staff, and students will move forward to make the analytical and sophisticated use of information. Their presentation, “Expanding Horizons through Information Literacy,” is part of the Trinity University Alumni Association’s 2008 Food for Thought luncheon lecture series and will take place at noon on Wednesday, May 7, in Trinity’s Coates University Center Fiesta Room.  Reservations should be made by today by calling the Alumni Relations Office at (210) 999-8404. 

ARTS San Antonio announces two evening cruises, courtesy of Rio San Antonio Cruises, tomorrow, May 6 and Wednesday, May 7. It’s the “26th Annual ARTS San Antonio Floating Feast-ival®”.  Support for the Floating Feast-ival provides part of the funding needed for arts programs. Both cruises begin each evening at the Marriott RiverWalk Hotel on the banks of the San Antonio River at 6:30 p.m. Each barge will be staffed with its own bartender and waiter, with up to 16 guests per barge. The barges will have a progressive port of call at each participating restaurant. People from many different faiths and denominations will gather to express their passions for a hunger-free community, today at the San Fernando Cathedral at 115 Main Plaza, in San Antonio. The program begins at 6:30 p.m.

The San Antonio Museum of Art and Musical Offerings present “Myth and Music”, a concert celebrating the reopening of SAMA's Greek and Roman Galleries. Houston Grand Opera Studio artists, Faith Sherman, mezzo-soprano and Kathleen Kelly, piano, with Musical Offerings' Joan Christenson, violin, present repertoire inspired by artworks found in the Greek and Roman Galleries at SAMA. Joe Scruggs will be in concert at 10 a.m. today at Laurie Auditorium, 715 Stadium Drive, on the Trinity University campus in San Antonio. Joe’s back with his “Nanny Nanny Boo Boo Musical Revue”. The entertainer returns for another hand clapping, foot tapping, sing-along, event for every member of the family. The 50-minute program is for ages 3 and up.  The web address is www.hellojoe.com.

Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center’s 27th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio presents a three-day festival beginning with a Senior Citizens Conjunto Dance (with Bene Medina y el Conjunto Águila) from 9 to 11 a.m., today at the Guadalupe Theatre.  Free with a reserved ticket.  A discounted three-day Festival Pass for Rosedale Park is available for Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center members and non-members. Ford Motor Company and San Antonio’s Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealers are proud to award 35 grants to community organizations and schools as part of their commitment to investing in education that spans more than 20 years.  At 10 a.m. today, at the Galeria Tonantzin at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 723 S. Brazos Street in San Antonio, nonprofit organizations and local schools will receive Salute to Education grants. Entertainment will be provided by Dreams Fulfilled Through Music. The 27th Annual “Tejano Conjunto Festival en San Antonio 2008” will take place from May 7 to 10, at the Guadalupe Theater and Rosedale Park and will feature the Tejano Conjunto Festival Poster Contest; inductions into the Conjunto Music Hall of Fame; workshops on conjunto music history, as well as the button accordion and bajo sexto; a Conjunto Music in Film and Video Retrospective at the Guadalupe Theater; and three days of the very best in conjunto music at Rosedale Park.  There will be food and beverage booths, accordion raffle, student recital and more.  For more information, contact the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center at (210) 271-3151 or visit www.guadalupeculturalarts.org.

Nationally known poet, Naomi Nye will give a reading and conduct a workshop in writing poetry on Thursday, May 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. but reservations are due by today.  There is a suggested donation, but students are free. Full scholarships are available. It will be located at the Center for Spiritual Growth and the Contemplative Life at 1523 Iowa Street in San Antonio. “Dancing with the Kerrville Stars” is the 8th Annual Springtime Splendor featuring dinner & dancing. “Lincolnesque” is presented by AtticRep in Residence at Trinity University from May 8 through 18 in the Ruth Taylor Theater Building, One Trinity Place, Trinity University.  This is a seriously comic look at Washington’s political strategies during elections. This is a San Antonio premiere. Leo is a Capitol Hill speechwriter struggling to stay employed. If you enjoy music, “That Broadway Revue Show!” opens tonight at Woodlawn Theatre, located at 1920 Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio. For family-style fun, the “Walk & Roll Fest” is at 8 a.m., this morning at the Botanical Gardens. There will be 5k and 10k walks, as well as longer (Mission Trails) and shorter (Brackenridge Park) bike rides. Music, refreshments, informational exhibits and door prizes will be provided. San Antonio College will join the Sanatoria Astronomical Association to celebrate “Astronomy Day” on Saturday, from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. with a public observation session using the San Antonio College Observatory and telescopes set up in the parking lot adjacent to the Scobee Planetarium. The public is invited to view “the Moon, the planets Saturn and Jupiter, and a variety of other targets.” This event is free and open to the public, and parents are encouraged to bring their children. “Pinocchio” will be presented at the Vexler Children’s Theatre from May 11 through May 29. Their adaptation of the family classic tale follows the wooden puppet on several mischievous adventures learning some valuable lessons on behavior and obeying the rules. The Youth of San Antonio’s Orchestra will play a Side by Side concert today, Sunday, May 11, at 2:30 p.m. at the Laurie Auditorium. Both orchestras will perform to breathe life into the Texas Library Association Bluebonnet-award nominated book, Ballet of the Elephants, by Leda Schubert. Other selections will include music from Tchaikovsky’s, Swan Lake; Fucik’s, Entrance of the Gladiators; Falla’s, El sombrero de tres picos; Stravinsky’s Firebird suite. Pioneers of San Antonio Music are taking the stage at La Plaza Guadalupe on Mother’s Day. The Esperanza Peace and Justice Center and Avenida Guadalupe Association present “Serenata de Oro: Canciones para mi Mamá” honoring the spirit of Mother’s Day, the work of women throughout the world for peace, justice and for community.
