Classical Spotlight has the latest news about concerts and performances from San Antonio and the Hill Country's vibrant classical music community. Hosted by John Clare, the program showcases the week's upcoming performances with music and interviews with local artists, conductors, and nationally-renowned classical music performers.

John Clare:

A former broadcaster for NPR, John previously worked with Voice of America, the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) and stations in Kansas, Nevada, California, and Pennsylvania. In 2005, Clare earned the Deems Taylor Award from ASCAP for radio broadcasting, citing his work on 20/20 Hearing.

As a skilled violinist, Clare is experienced on the other side of the microphone, having played in concerts across the United States, including performances with famed tenors Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli.

Live broadcast of the Vienna Philharmonic and Franz Welser Most takes place Jan. 1st

The Vienna Philharmonic has selected the General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera, Franz Welser Most, to conduct the New Year's Concert 2013. Philharmonic Chairman Clemens Hellsberg said the invitation was extended not only on the basis of the convincing artistic success of his New Year's Concert 2011, but also in recognition of Most's stellar collaboration with the Philharmonic as well as in the Vienna State Opera.

Holiday Pops For All Ages With San Antonio Symphony & Children's Chorus

There are three chances to go to Holiday Pops and hear seasonal favorites with Akiko Fujimoto and the San Antonio Symphony featuring guest vocalists Cristal Smith, Eric Schmidt, and the Children's Chorus of San Antonio this weekend.

The first two concerts are at the Majestic Theatre and include holiday classics by Leroy Anderson, Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and John Rutter.

San Antonio Native 'Bears' His Creative Soul In New Release

Robert Xavier Rodriguez combines cello music on new recording

The latest release of Robert Xavier Rodriguez on Albany Records spans several years, and includes all the cello and piano works, plus a work for solo cello.

"It's wonderful to have quality recordings out, you can show what a piece is supposed to sound like. It is, of course, always great to  have live performances, but I hope recordings will help generate more live performances of my music," says Rodriguez.

Heart Of Texas Concert Band Mixes Winds And Voices For Holiday Concert

Mark Rogers leads band and choruses this Sunday

When the Heart of Texas Concert Band (HOTCB) performs this weekend, they will add an element for the very first time in the ensemble's history: a choir. Band and choir works are more rare than orchestral accompaniment, but Mark Rogers has done some searching and arranging.

"Nancy Oehlert approached me about collaborating with the Encore Youth Chorus, and I thought it was a natural fit, and immediately thought of the holidays," says conductor Mark Rogers.

Musica Sacra SA Presents Briggs And More For Advent

Not just a concert, but a service too

Already in their third season, Musica Sacra SA will perform Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. at Our Lady of Atonement. The program follows the Second Sunday of Advent - both musically and literally.

Robert Finster says there are familiar composers and one you might not know. "David Briggs is a great improviser for the organ, and has transcribed all of the Gigout solos! He works in London at a church, plus he composes very original pieces. I first heard of him on your radio station [KPAC] with Heart and Voice!"

USAF Band Of The West Gives Musical Gift To San Antonio

Three Chances To Hear Holiday In Blue

The USAF Band of the West's Concert Band & Various Ensembles perform this weekend at Edgewood ISD Theatre of Performing Arts, 607  SW 34th Street in San Antonio.

The free concerts are:

  • Friday, December 7th at 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, December 8th at 3:00 p.m. 
  • Sunday, December 9th at 3:00 p.m.

Tickets may be printed from their website or picked up from the Lackland AFB and Randolph AFB ITT offices, Ft. Sam Houston MWR office, and the Fiesta Commission Office.
