Classical Spotlight has the latest news about concerts and performances from San Antonio and the Hill Country's vibrant classical music community. Hosted by John Clare, the program showcases the week's upcoming performances with music and interviews with local artists, conductors, and nationally-renowned classical music performers.

John Clare:

A former broadcaster for NPR, John previously worked with Voice of America, the Canadian Broadcast Corporation (CBC) and stations in Kansas, Nevada, California, and Pennsylvania. In 2005, Clare earned the Deems Taylor Award from ASCAP for radio broadcasting, citing his work on 20/20 Hearing.

As a skilled violinist, Clare is experienced on the other side of the microphone, having played in concerts across the United States, including performances with famed tenors Luciano Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli.

Patrick Dupre Quigley returns for The Messiah

It is the fourth time for Maestro Quigley to lead the San Antonio Symphony and third to conduct the Messiah. "I change it up each year, so if someone came last year, they won't hear the exact same thing, but I also include all the favorites - He Shall Feed His Flock, For Unto Us a Child is Born, and of course, the Hallelujah Chorus," says Patrick Quigley.

Christmas Through the Ages shows many of sides to the Symphony of the Hills. They will play the first portion of 'The Messiah,' selections by Mannhein Steamroller's Chip Davis as well as A Canadian Brass Chrsitmas. Classical masterworks of Vaughan-Williams and Samuel Barber also round out the program at the Callioux Theater on Thursday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m..

It's a new location for Winter Magic with the Children's Chorus of San Antonio! "Our numbers have grown this year which is absolutely wonderful, but we needed a larger space," says Marguerite McCormick.

"We combine the choirs in a couple of different ways - sometimes two or three of the training choirs will sing together, sometimes the advanced choirs will sing together, and then we do feature all seven choirs; all 250 plus children in this concert!"

Fredericksburg Chorale Brings Old And New Together For Christmas Concerts

Christmas Concert includes Bach, Saint-Saens and Hierholzer

It is a busy time of year, but the Fredericksburg Chorale are prepared and ready for three concerts Friday and Saturday.

"We have all ages: sixteen, seventeen, twenty-year-olds to ninety, and ninety-five-year-old members! It really is a great mix, and a delight to hear the teamwork," says director Mark Hierholzer.

Hierholzer will have a new work on the program and lead selections from the keyboard.

Akiko Fujimoto is the assistant director of the San Antonio Symphony and her duties include giving pre-concert talks, knowing the repertory just in case (called cover conductor), conducting educational and pops concerts, and this year leading a new series of baroque concerts with musicians of the San Antonio Symphony. Celebrate Candlelight And Chorus With San Antonio Youth Choirs

Marguerite McCormick leads the Children's Chorus of San Antonio

It's an evening of seasonal music by candlelight presented by the "elite choirs": the Chamber Choir and Youth Chorale. This year CCSA brightens Laurel Heights United Methodist Church with their music!

"This is always a very special concert because we can do more with programming, we can feature more groups within the choruses because these youngsters are the elite, the advanced groups," says Marguerite.
