The Newsmaker Hour features speakers addressing local and national organizations on a variety of topics and current events.  Local organizations regularly featured include the World Affairs Council of San Antonio, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce, the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Free Trade Alliance San Antoino.  Speakers addressing students and the community at local colleges and universities are also featured.  The Newsmaker Hour is produced by Texas Public Radio's Ernie Villarreal.

Rails to Trails

May 27, 2012 · The Rails to Trails Conservancy is a non-profit organization whose mission is to turn abandoned or no longer in use rail lines into a network of trails across the country. Keith Laughlin is the president, and he spoke at the 2012 Texas Trails and Active Transportation Conference held February in San Antonio. There are more than 20,000 miles of open rail trails across the country with another 9,000 miles as potential rail trails to be built. Laughlin spoke on February 3, 2012. Alternative Transportation: Lessons learned from Europe

May 20, 2012 · Former Congressman James Oberstar is an avid bicyclist. During his term as a U.S. House of Representative member from Minnesota, he was known to champion cycling issues and served in Congress from 1975 until 2011. He spoke Feb. 2, 2012 at the 2012 Texas Trails and Active Transportation Conference held in San Antonio. The title of his presentation is "Alternative Transportation: Lessons learned from Europe". Bringing Racial and Socio Economic Diversity to Bicycling

May 13, 2012 ·Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis of Houston is an active bicyclist, and has been considered an important advocate for bicycling issues in the Texas Legislature.  He believes bicycling isn't only a great alternative mode of transportation, but can help address the obesity issue.  He spoke on February 2, 2012 at the 2012 Texas Trails and Active Transportation Conference in San Antonio.  The title of his presentation is "Bringing Racial and Socio Economic Diversity to Bicycling."  His presentation is part of the Newsmaker Hour National Bike Month speaker series, underwritten by Bombay Bicycle Club.


The Country with the Greatest Potential for Bicycling--The United States

May 6, 2012 · This is the first of four presentations featured during the month of May from the 2012 Texas Trails and Active Transportation Conference held in San Antonio in February. The series is being presented on the Newsmaker Hour in observance of May as National Bike Month, and is underwritten by Bombay Bicycle Club. The first featured speaker is John Burke, President of Trek Bicycles. The title of his presentation is "The Country with the Greatest Potential for Bicycling - the United States". In his presentation Burke talks about bicycling not only as an alternative mode of transportation, but as a means to address environmental and health concerns. Introducing John Burke is Hill Abell, owner of Bicycle Sport Shop in Austin, Texas.


Congressman Charlie Gonzalez: State of the District

April 29, 2012 ·For more than half a century the name Gonzalez has represented San Antonio and the Congressional 20th District seat of Texas. First it was Henry B. Gonzalez who represented the 20th Congressional District seat from 1961 until he retired in 1999. Succeeding him was his son Charlie who is now serving his seventh term as U.S. Congressman from the 20th District. But in November 2011, over the Thanksgiving holidays Congressman Gonzalez surprised many by announcing he would not be seeking re-election. On this edition of the Newsmaker Hour, Congressman Charlie Gonzalez delivers his final State of the District address at a dinner hosted by the West San Antonio Chamber of Commerce on April 4, 2012. His remarks will focus on shy is the national debate on immigration? How it impacts all Latinos, the undocumented and citizen alike and how we resolve issue will determine the future not only of our Latino communities, but of our nation.


Texas Water Symposium: Fracking

April 22, 2012 · In the third of four panel discussions of the 2011-2012 Texas Water Symposium, "Fracking and the Energy/Water Nexus" is the title of the topic being discussed. The new oil and gas deposits found through the process of what is known as fracking has brought an economic boom to the South Texas area. The Texas Water Symposium is a joint project of Texas Tech University, Schreiner University, The Hill Country Alliance and Texas Public Radio. This panel discussion was held on April 12, 2012 on the campus of Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas. Moderating the program is Tim Summerlin, President of Schreiner University.


State of the City: 2012

April 15, 2012 · San Antonio mayor Julian Castro delivered the annual State of the City address at the 2012 United State of the City address on March 23, 2012. The event was hosted by the Alamo Asian Chamber of Commerce, the Alamo City Black Chamber of Commerce, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce and the San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Making some opening remarks and introducing the mayor is Darryl Byrd, CEO of SA2020.


Healthcare Businesswomen's Association State of the Industry Address

April 8, 2012 · In 2009, a Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce study showed that the biomedical and healthcare industries in San Antonio had an economic impact of more than $24.5 billion.  This study also showed that one in six San Antonio residents is employed in this industry. 

A  professional organization providing leadership for women in the biomedical and healthcare fields is the Healthcare Businesswomen's Association.  In March, the organization held its fourth annual State of the Industry with the title of the evening's panel discussion being "A Meeting of the Minds: A Time of Change and Collaboration". 

On the panel are Mauli Agrawal, Dean of the College of Engineering at the UTSA; Colonel Mary E. Garr, Chief Operating Officer, San Antonio Military Health System, San Antonio Texas; George Hernandez, CEO and President of the University Health System San Antonio Texas; Gary Pfeiffer, MD., Chief Medical Officer, WellMed Medical Management, San Antonio Texas and Janet Campbell, Chairman and CEO of Seno Medical Instruments, Inc.  Moderating the discussion is Texas Public Radio President and CEO Dan Skinner, who opens the program.  The event was held on March 6, 2012 at the Colonnade Omni Hotel.


Healthy Watersheds:  Managing Natural Water Storage & Filtration Systems

April 1, 2012 · This was the second in the series of panel discussions of the 2011-2012 Texas Water Symposium.  Moderating the discussion is Tim Birdsong, Chief of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Freshwater Habitat Conservation Branch.  On the panel are Dr. Kevin Wagner, Associate Director of the Texas Water Resource Institute; Aaron Wendt, Statewide Watershed Planning Coordinator for the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board; Dr. Gary Garnett, Director of the Watershed Policy and Management Program of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department; Dr. Tom Arsuffi, Director of the Llano River Field Station at Texas Tech University at Junction, Texas and Christy Muse, Executive Director of the Hill Country Alliance.  The Texas Water Symposium is a joint project of Texas Tech University, Schreiner University, the Hill Country Alliance and Texas Public Radio.


KSTX Town Hall: The Voting Rights Act

March 25, 2012 · TPR News hosted another in its signature KSTX Town Hall series on March 20, 2012 with a community conversation about the Voting Rights Act.  TPR's News Director David Martin Davies moderated a civil discussion that examines the legislation's relevance in the post-civil rights era, its role in the redistricting debate, and how the act may impact the state's voter ID law.  Panelists included Henry Flores, Ph.D., St. Mary’s University; Gilbert Garcia, staff writer with "Plaza de Armas;" State Representative Trey Martinez Fischer (D-San Antonio); George Rodriguez, president of the San Antonio Tea Party; and Trey Trainor, attorney with Beirne, Maynard & Parsons, LLP.  The program opens with a report providing an overview on the events that lead to the Voting Rights Act legislation.

Emerging Brazil:  Now Comes the Hardest Part

March 18, 2012 · The South American country of Brazil in the coming years will have the world focused on it, as it hosts the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympic Games in 2016.  In addition to those two global sporting events, Brazil is an emerging country whose economy is one of the world's fastest growing.  "Emerging Brazil:  Now Comes the Hardest Part" is the title of the presentation given by Paulo Sotero, Director of the Brazil Institute at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio.  He spoke on February 23, 2012 at the Double Tree Hotel.  Introducing Mr. Sotero is Nancy Shivers, Vice President of Programs for the World Affairs Council of San Antonio.


Inbound Medical Tourism to the U.S.

March 11, 2012 · The University of the Incarnate Word's Center for Medical Tourism Research is the first of its kind in the United States devoted to medical tourism research.  In February 2012, the center held its annual conference in San Antonio with people from around the world attending.  Tricia Johnson, Ph.D. of Rush University in Chicago delivered one of the presentations titled "Inbound Medical Tourism to the U.S."  Opening the program is Raul Rodriguez, chairman of the board of advisors of the Center for Medical Tourism Research.

Texas Senate District 25 Candidate Debate

March 4, 2012 · The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce hosted a Texas Senate District 25 debate featuring the candidates running for that office.  Running for the Texas Senate District 25 seat are the incumbent Senator Jeff Wentworth, former Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones and New Braunfels emergency room physician, Dr. Donna Campbell.  The event was held on February 8, 2012 at the Pearl Stable in San Antonio.  Moderating the debate is former "San Antonio Light" and "Express-News" columnist Rick Casey, host of public television KLRN's program "Texas Week with Rick Casey."

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal

February 26, 2012 · Governor Bobby Jindal is the first Indian-American governor in the United States, having been elected in October 2007.  He rose to national political prominence when he decided to run for governor of Louisiana in 2003.  He has been highly regarded as a rising star in the Republican Party.  In 2009, he delivered the Republican Party's response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address.  The World Affairs Council of San Antonio honored President and CEO of NuStar Energy, Curt Anastacio, as its 2012 Citizen of the Year.  In keeping with custom, the honoree gets to select who they would like to be the evening's keynote speaker.  Anastacio chose Governor Jindal whose speech focused on education. The Citizen of the Year Gala was held at the Marriott Rivercenter Hotel on February 15, 2012.


Top 10 Global Trends Affecting Downtowns

February 19, 2012 · A segment of American society that, in the past five years, has been elevated as a trend according to Brad Segal, is the emergence of young professional women.  This segment, says Segal, could potentially shape American cities.  Segal is one of the nation's leading authorities on downtown trends and issues.  He has more than 30 years of downtown management and community development experience and is president of P.U.M.A., Progressive Urban Management Associates.  He spoke to members of San Antonio's Downtown Alliance at their first Urban Renaissance luncheon for 2012.  The title of Segal's presentation is "Top 10 Global Trends Affecting Downtowns."  Among the trends he discusses are the changing demographics, consumer behaviour, shifts in transportation and mobility and the emergence of young professional women.

Intelligence Squared U.S. - The World Would Be Better Off Without Religion

February 12, 2012 · This week's "Newsmaker Hour" features another Oxford-style debate from Intelligence Squared U.S.  The motion debated is "The World Would Be Better Off Without Religion."  On the panel arguing in favor is A.C. Grayling, renowned aethist and Professor of Philosophy and Matthew Chapman, author, filmmaker and co-founder of Science Debate.  Speaking against the motion are Rabbi David Wolpe, named the number one pulpit Rabbi in the United States by "Newsweek" and Dinesh D'Souza, President of the Kings College and author of "What's So Great about Christianity?"  Moderating the program is John Donvan, ABC News Nightline correspondent.

Saving State Money by Reorganizing TxDOT

February 5, 2012 · Phil Wilson sees transportation as economic development.   Wilson is the Executive Director of the Texas Department of Transportation, having assumed that position in October 2011.  He was the guest speaker at a luncheon hosted by the San Antonio Mobility Coalition, Inc., an organization whose goal is to identify and advocate funding for multi-modal transportation solutions for the San Antonio metropolitan area.  In his presentation Wilson talks about re-organizing TxDOT, thus saving money for the state.  Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff introduces Phil Wilson.


Escape from Cuba - The Garcia Family's Story

February 5, 2012 · Victoria Garcia is a partner in the law firm of Bracewell & Guiliani focusing on immigration and labor law.  She was the invited guest speaker of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio and spoke on January 12, 2012.  Ms. Garcia talks to members and guests of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio about her family's escape from Cuba at the beginning of Fidel Castro's takeover.  Patrick Tobin, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio introduces Ms. Garcia.

January 29, 2012 · From Intelligence Squared U.S., the motion debated will be "Should the U.N. Admit Palestine as a Full Member State?"  Intelligence Squared U.S. is an Oxford-style debate program moderated by ABC News Nightline correspondent John Donvan.  Arguing in favor of the motion are Mustafa Barghouthi, former Palestinian National Authority Presidential candidate and Daniel Levy, former Israeli Government Negotiator.  Against the motion are Dore Gold, former Israeli U.N. Ambassador and advisor to Prime Minister Netanyahu and Aaron David Miller, former U.S. Mideast negotiator.

San Antonio Economic Forecast

January 22, 2012 · The San Antonio Hispanic Chamber of Commerce held its annual Economic Forecast breakfast on January 12, 2012 at the Plaza Club.  The Chamber invited Keith Phillips, senior economist with the San Antonio branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Maya Halebic, senior economist with the SABER Research Institute and Steve Nivin, Chief economist with the SABER Research Institute to give their forecast of what they think the national, state and local economy may do according to trends and other data they've compiled in the past year.

January 15, 2012 · John F. Dini is recognized as one of the nation's leading experts on small business ownership. He's also a consultant and coach to hundreds of business owners. He was the guest speaker at a San Antonio Non-profit Council luncheon on January 11, 2012, the topic "Beating the Boomer Bust." In his presentation he talks about the challenges facing retiring entrepreneurs, non-profit and corporate business executives as a result of transitioning baby boomers. Introducing John Dini is Scott McAninch, Executive Director of the San Antonio Nonprofit Council.

Jon Donvan ABC News Nightline correspondent moderates the discussion featuring Dan Abrams, a legal analyst for ABC News and Hanna Rosin, a journalist for Slate and The Atlantic arguing in favour of the motion. Arguing against the motion are Christina Hoff Sommers, feminist and author of The War Against Boys and David Zinezenko, editor-in-Chief of Men's Health magazine. The debate took place on September 20, 2011.
