World Music with Deirdre Saravia

Saturdays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on KSTX 89.1 FM

World Music with Deirdre Saravia takes you on a musical journey to some of the world’s most fascinating places.   From China to Brazil and the Balkans to Indonesia, World Music will introduce you to sounds from a world far from your own.  A world traveler herself, the Belfast, Northern Ireland native introduces each piece with details about the music, the musicians and the culture that produced them.

Saravia credits the work of performers like Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon for bringing world music to the attention of American audiences, but she has also seen a change in attitude in America towards foreigners.

Today foreigners feel more comfortable in celebrating their uniqueness, and as a result, there is a burgeoning interest in world music. "Not understanding the language is no longer a problem," says Saravia. "People enjoy the music for the beat, the instrumentation."

Though each World Music show is built around a central theme, it will rarely center on one type of music. Saravia strives for variety, though there will always be a connection between the songs she plays; music from as many as 15 countries can be represented in the same show.

"You come to learn that people are basically the same throughout the world," she says. "They sing about the same things."

Musicians Unite For Peace In War-Torn Mali

Fatoumata Diawara's first Album, 'Fatou' was released in 2011

The West African nation of Mali has seen instability and violence since March of 2012 when a military coup overthrew the government of President Amadou Toumani Touré. Since then, the violence has escalated as Islamic extremists have joined the fighting and further divided the country into North and South.

This month France announced their intervention due to the rapid escalation of violence over the last few months, and the United States is now helping with operational support.

Italian "Befane"

Each week on World Music (Saturday nights from 8-10 on KSTX 89.1 FM), I take a look at celebrations happening around the world. This weekend marks the official end of the Christmas season for many cultures.

The Epiphany is celebrated around the world in many different ways. This day marks the manifestation of the Son of God as a human being in Jesus Christ. It’s also the day marked by the visitation of the Three Kings to the infant Jesus.

Anoushka Shankar Goes Flamenco On 'Traveller'

Credit Deutsche Grammophon

Flamenco music is relatively new on the music scene (especially considering the long history of music as art), but still dates backs a couple of hundred years. It was brought to Spain by gypsies, who were erroneously named because they were mistaken for Egyptians but are of Indian descent.

Mexican Songstress Carla Morrison Wins Latin Grammy For 'Déjenme Llorar'

Despite her English name, Carla Morrison is Mexican. Her father, Hilario Viera, ran away from Durango, Mexico as a young man and ended up  in San Diego. Hilario was adopted by William Morrison, who in turn gave him his new surname.

Years later, Hilario returned to Mexico and married Porfiria Flores in Tecate where Carla was born. She received a high school education in Phoenix and pursued music studies at the University of Arizona. It wasn't until she reached high school that anyone realized she could sing, as she was extremely shy as a girl.

Senegalese Singer/Composer Badu Boye's 'We Can Win'

Credit Laromusic/Shiadoo (label)

Badu Boye was born in Senegal, but is now based in Paris, France. In the 1990's he and his brother, Pape Armand Boye introduced a new sound into the Senegalese music scene. Very different from the electronic mbalax music of the day, the brothers played acoustic guitars. Badu's style today sounds very similar, on his eponymously titled CD, the songs are uplifting and inspirational, albeit with a touch of home sickness. A cello, violin and harmonica sprinkled throughout the album are very attractive additions and add an extra texture to the acoustic sound.
