San Antonio Metro Health District

In The First Segment:

The health of San Antonio is gauged each year by the San Antonio Metro Health District's annual report. Bexar County and San Antonio have never been beacons of health, but the report details the specific issues that we are dealing with locally.

From unprecedented levels of syphilis infections to amputations from diabetes at a rate four times the national average, the city still has major health problems.

As President Barack Obama enters into his second term, he’s building a new cabinet. Latino political activists are watching the process closely and waiting to see if Hispanics are going to be well represented - while also reminding the White House that Latinos are now powerful voting bloc.

In the first Obama administration two cabinet posts were filed by Latinos – Secretary of Interior Ken Salazar and Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis. Also former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson was nominated to be Commerce Secretary but was forced to withdraw.

U.S. Congress

Congressman Charlie Gonzalez is ending a 14-year career in the U.S. House, and he's going out as things are heating up -- the august body is still dealing with the political crisis known as the fiscal cliff. Gonzalez explains why he’s leaving Congress and what his successor, Joaquín Castro, needs to know to deal with the pressures of Washington D.C.

U.S. Congress

For the first time in 50 years there wasn’t a Gonzalez listed on the ballot for Congressional District 20 of Texas.

Gonzalez is done with politics, but he isn’t done with being a congressman – not until his replacement, Democrat Joaquín Castro, is sworn in as his replacement in district 20.

Gonzalez has a prediction about the looming  sequestration, or fiscal cliff, that could force automatic austere spending cuts to the federal budget: “Fiscal Cliff - It’s not going to happen.”
