The Alamo Colleges have launched the first completely virtual career center in the state for people looking for a new job or educational path.

Taking a page from the realm of virtual reality and games like Second Life, those in and around Bexar County interested in another career can wander a digital replica of a career center.

“We’re using a 3D gaming environment to connect them to jobs, education, training, and employment opportunities,” said Eva Esquivel with Workforce Solutions Alamo.

A sizable gap is occurring in Bexar County between employers who need a certain skill set for a job and people qualified for the open positions.

In January, Workforce Solutions Alamo reported that there were nearly 1,700 help wanted ads for registered nurses, nearly 600 for retail sales managers and nearly 400 for computer support specialists, but Eva Esquivel, works for Workforce, said people looking for jobs don't have the skills needed for these fields.
