TxDOT Offering Free Cab Rides For Intoxicated Fiesta Goers

The Texas Department of Transportation is reviving its Fiesta Safe voucher program this year to offer free cab rides to intoxicated individuals.

San Antonio Police Chief William McManus echoed the words of other law enforcement agencies on catching drunk drivers.

"If you drink and drive, you’re going to get caught," McManus said. "It’s just a matter of when. When you do, it’s going to cost you a lot of money and a lot of heartache that you don’t need."

After being arrested, booked and released from jail for allegedly driving while intoxicated, Rep. Naomi Gonzalez, D-El Paso, apologized to the entire Texas House.

During this year’s South by Southwest festival, Gonzalez is alleged to have been driving drunk when she hit another motorist, which caused a cyclist to be injured in process.

Free Cab Rides Offered To Intoxicated Off-Duty Bexar County Deputies

 In the first 27 days of Bexar County Sheriff Susan Pamerleau's time in office, three sheriff’s deputies have been arrested under the suspicion of DWI. To discourage deputies from driving while drunk, the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County is providing free cab rides those who need a ride home.

Bexar County Sheriff Susan Pamerleau said a deputy relaxing when they’re off-duty is understandable.

"But when relaxation turns into intoxication and the deputy gets behind the wheel, that is unacceptable," she said.

Will Texas Allow Liquor Sales On Sundays?

Grocery stores cannot sell alcoholic beverages before noon on Sundays, the proposed bill would allow liquor stores the same privilege.

A bill filed by State Rep. Senfronia Thompson (D) of Houston would allow liquor stores to join its supermarket brethren in allowing alcohol sales after 12 p.m. Liquor stores across Texas must lock their doors on Sundays, and grocery stores cannot sell alcohol before noon.
