Beacon Hill Neighbors Recommend Zoning Change Request For Controversial Art Gallery

Residents cast their ballot on whether or not to recommend approval of a zoning change request. They overwhelmingly supported the request.

In an overwhelming vote in favor of a well-publicized zoning case in Beacon Hill, residents of the community just north of downtown gave their approval for an art gallery and design business.

The neighborhood vote Monday night is just another step in the process of re-zoning French & Michigan, which takes its name from the intersection at which it is located. The building is currently zoned as residential, but its legacy has been mostly as a commercial structure located just off Fredericksburg Road.

Gallery Remains Closed As Neighborhood, Owners Make Their Case In Zoning Debate

Art gallery and design firm French & Michigan is closed until it can be properly zoned.

The intersection of French Place and Michigan Avenue is more than a location in the inner-city neighborhood of Beacon Hill, it also happens to be the namesake of an art gallery that's been embroiled in controversy over the zoning of the building.

The words "Casa de Tarjetas" (House of Cards) are written in red cursive outside the historic square,  paying homage to the building's former owner, local urban infill expert Jonathan Card.

New Beacon Hill Basketball Court Is A Place To Shape Young People

The Beacon Hill basketball court opened in late 2012 and is phase one of park construction plans in the Beacon Hill neighborhood.

Beacon Hill is an eclectic neighborhood just north of downtown San Antonio. Victorian-style homes line the streets, but suburban sprawl attracted people away from the area, leaving many of those homes and parks in decay.

Now, Beacon Hill is on the rebound with a new playground and basketball court, helping to breathe life into the neighborhood.
