A resolution passed by City Council Thursday acknowledges the importance of maintaining Brooke Army Medical Center and its military missions in San Antonio.

Though the federal government has no current plans to downsize the number of military bases, local communities aren't taking any chances.

It is likely that the state legislature will pass some type of annexation reform, Representative Roland Gutierrez said.

Friday, at Texas’ oldest VFW post in San Antonio, Abbott signed six bills that were part of his veterans’ initiative.   The bills, carried mainly by Bexar County lawmakers, improve access to mental healthcare and make it easier for veterans and their families to acquire occupational licenses.

Although San Antonio was treated kindly in the recently-signed budget bill, local officials are starting now to prepare for possible base closures later this decade.

Mark Frye serves on the City of San Antonio Military Transformation Taskforce, a group that advocates for the local military at the national level. He said the budget bill just signed into law after Christmas only protects bases through the next budget year.
