You may have seen it while driving on Hildebrand, approaching Broadway, there’s a massive, tiled gate. Inside are curious sculptures and benches. It’s called Miraflores, and its past is fascinating. Now it appears its future will be, too.

The Paul Jolly Center for Pet Adoptions is now open at Brackenridge Park and leaders are hoping the fresh design will make an impact on adoptions in a city that has struggled with animal overpopulation.

"We want this to be a destination [and] not just only for adoptions," said Joel Mclellan, the director of operations for the center.

San Antonio has landed another important cultural designation. Brackenridge Park is the first site to be named as a State Antiquities Landmark.

Jingu Family

The legacy of Mabel Jingu Enkoji will live on through the Japanese Tea Garden and the Jingu House, the home she grew up in.

Her daughter, Peggy Nishio, said she was a non-traditional Japanese person because she was boisterous and loved throwing parties. Just the same, Nishio said, her mother became a “Texas Asian.”
