The annual Wurstfest celebration in New Braunfels offers a variety of food, fun, and entertainment, from families with German ancestry, to those who just pretend to be German for a day.

Katy Walterscheidt celebrates her husband’s German heritage.

“I come almost every year,” said Walterscheidt. “I’m married to a German, and so we love to celebrate Germans.”

The 10-day “Salute to Sausage” has become a cultural phenomenon. It began 51 years ago as Sausage Festival, but later morphed into what is now known as Wurstfest.

Hwy 281 & Loop 1604 Ramps Should Relieve Rush Hour Congestion

The 1604 East & West is unveiled by construction workers. Since construction began 18 months ago nearly one million man hours have gone into the project.

Hwy 281 North and Loop 1604 are finally connecting this afternoon evening and will finally be open after months of construction.

Anyone who travels the 281/1604 corridor knows the extended commute they face during rush hour, but with the completion of one of the connectors, drivers on 281 North can access 1604 East & West without having to exit the freeway.

As Superstorm Sandy victims shiver in the face of a new snow storm moving through the area Wednesday, CPS Energy crews from San Antonio remain in New Jersey, doing what they can to help. 

A team of 51 CPS workers sent to work on downed power lines in New Jersey reached a major milestone Wednesday, restoring a complete substation.

SAPD Sgt. Honored for Saving Teens from Burning Car

San Antonio Police Sgt. Jesse Garcia was on his way home Saturday morning when he saw a burning vehicle.

“I just ran up to the fire and never in my mind did I think that there would be people inside the vehicle,” said Garcia. "I heard her [the driver] saying, 'I don't want to die this way. I don't want to die, don't leave me.'" 

The car, which had two girls inside ages 17 and 19, slammed into a utility pole near 1604 and Sulfur Springs. The driver was trapped under her seatbelt.

The CDC Recommend Baby Boomers Get Tested for Hepatitis C

UT Medicine San Antonio and the University Health System are kicking off a screening program for Hepatitis C among baby boomer patients at University Hospital. The CDC now recommends everyone born in the years from 1945 to 1965 be tested.

Jaywalking Fatalities Up So Police Cracking Down On Enforcement

The San Antonio Police Department said that at this time last year, 28 people had been struck and killed due to jaywalking. The problem is only getting worse this year with 31 fatalities during the same January to October period; this is why police officers are beginning to be more strict in enforcing violations.

During an Oct. 26 press conference at the Primrose at Monticello Senior Apartments on Fredericksburg Road, Chief William McManus announced the start of a one-week grace period for jaywalkers.

Former Councilman Frank Wing Dead at 75

Wing served San Antonio for 16 years in Council District 4, from 1977 to 1993.  He served under four mayoral administrations – first under Lila Cockrell, then Henry Cisneros, Lila Cockrell again, and finally Nelson Wolff.

Wing was one of the first council members elected from a single-member district. Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said Wing took office during a time when ethnic tensions were strained, and his effect on San Antonio was extensive.

Pride Center San Antonio Providing New Home to LGBTQ Community

San Antonio is one the few major cities in the country without a dedicated LGBTQ community center. While there were several attempts in the past, a collective of community members is laying the ground work to establish a new one.

The Pride Center San Antonio doesn’t have a dedicated space yet, but the people behind its creation want it to be a connector for the gay community.
