SAISD Launches Book Mobile To Help Encourage Summer Reading

Elementary students on the near Eastside are getting access to free books during summer vacation thanks to a roaming book mobile.

In the lobby of Herff Elementary -- a dual-language school -- sit 1,500 books in different boxes marked by grade level and language. Principal Tracy Smith is trying an experiment to get these books in the hands children in the neighborhood over the summer.

"This is the maiden voyage – maiden voyage of the Herff Book Mobile," Smith said.

Spurs Stars Dedicate New Learning Center At Wheatley Middle School

The Spurs are holding a one-game advantage in their showdown with the Miami Heat for the NBA Finals, and despite the pressure, the team took time Wednesday to dedicate a new learning center at Wheatley Middle School.

NBA Commissioner David Stern said this is the 811th NBA live, learn and play center of its kind. Teams who make the finals are given an NBA grant to give back to their communities.

Pre-K Board Seeking Developers For Remaining Learning Centers

Although Pre-K 4 SA's first two model education centers aren't yet open, the board of directors is now submitting a request for proposals from developers to begin looking at two additional sites on the east and west sides of town.

The remaining education centers will fulfill the requirements of the eight-year Pre-K 4 SA program, which is expected to see 22,400 students over the initial life of the program.

This August the first two centers, one on the Northwest Side and the other on the Southeast Side, will open.

Quarterly Grant Helps Nonprofit Assist Low-Income Families

A project of Merced Housing Texas under construction on the West Side of San Antonio, Casitas de Villa Corona is an apartment community for low-income seniors.

San Antonio nonprofit Merced Housing Texas has received a $200,000 grant to help low-income families in its housing developments and throughout the city.

For the next two years the group will receive $25,000 every quarter to help facilitate its programs. Merced operates nearly 1,700 units for low income people across the state in Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, San Antonio and other cities but are based here.

Federal Officials Make Recommendations For East Side Improvements

Federal officials visited San Antonio's East Side this week to guage how reinvestment dollars are shaping housing and education needs.

The city received federal funding in the form of two grants: the Choice Neighborhood Grant, awarded in 2012, which targets housing, and the Promise Neighborhood Grant, awarded in 2011, which focuses on education.
