Video: Grease Clogs Inside San Antonio's Sewers

SAWS customers will likely see a 9.9 percent net rate increase on their water bills in the new year, thanks in large part to an increase in sewer overflows. The water utility is asking consumers to join them for upcoming community meetings to learn more about how to reduce costs.

San Antonio Water System has 5,000 miles of sewer pipe and Spokeswoman Anne Hayden said sewer spills have become so common that the utility must do more repair and clean-up than they have had to do in the past.

Part of the problem is consumer habits.

Study Shows Manufacturing Made $22.5 Billion Impact In 2011

The Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce study shows that manufacturing grew from a $7 billion industry in 1991 to $22.5 billion in 2011.

“That is right up there with the biggest industries that we have in San Antonio,” said Chamber President and CEO Richard Perez. "Salaries have grown, so this is a place for young people to really find excellent jobs that will fulfill the needs of their families and themselves as being citizens of this community."

Hostess Brands Donate Twinkies, Ho Hos and Zingers To San Antonio Food Bank

The San Antonio Food Bank is stocked with 4 million pounds of food at any given time, but turns this quantity over quickly to make room for more food that will eventually make its way to 535 distribution sites. President and CEO Eric Cooper said that every year the food bank pushes 50 million pounds of food to people in 16 counties.

"That's about six to seven semi truckloads a day that will come in and go out through the food bank,” said Cooper.
