Employee Health Screenings Help Trim City Budget

On Tuesday, city employees rolled up their sleeves to take blood pressure and other tests as part of a biometrics wellness screening.

"It's just good to know where you stand as far as your health," said K Rahman, who has worked in the city’s public works department for six years. Rahman also said he has seen an increase in the city’s focus on healthy initiatives for its employees.

New Boarding Home Ordinances Go Into Effect March 1

Owners who register by March 1 will have until Jan. 1 of 2014 to install the required fire sprinkler system, but those who register after March 1 will have only 30 days from the date they register to meet all the stipulations of the ordinance.

After safety concerns about boarding homes reached the city council following last year's deadly fire, leaders began drafting tighter restrictions on the inspection of boarding homes throughout the city.

Alamo College Welding Program Giving Jobs Boost To Hill Country

The Texas Workforce Commission issued a $304,000 grant to train 135 new and current employees of Fox Tank, a manufacturer of steel-welded oil field tanks for the energy industry in Kerrville.

This is the latest grant-funded program by the Workforce Commission and the Alamo Colleges. Earlier this month the two set up a cloud computing program to help train Rackspace workers.

Two Week Grace Period Before Warrant Roundup Begins

Last year, about 25,000 warrants were cleared during the annual warrant roundup, and in two weeks the San Antonio Police Department and other law enforcement in Bexar County will head out again.

“They are all warrants that would involve no jail time; it's all fines," said SAPD Chief William McManus. "The unfortunate part is that if you don't clear the warrant and you are picked up on it you will spend some time in jail while the warrant is being taken care of.”
