A new poll shows approval ratings for Republicans in Congress have dropped to a record low, but will it affect statewide elections for people like Democrat Wendy Davis?

The Associated Press survey shows over 62 percent of those polled believe Republicans in Congress are solely to blame for the government shutdown that ended last Thursday.

Davis Campaign Heads To D.C. For National Fund Raising Event

Democratic Gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis is headed to Washington, D.C., next week to raise some national campaign cash.

The event is being hosted by two groups that helped launch Davis, Battleground Texas and The Lone Star Project.

"It’s a gathering of Texans who are in D.C.," said The Lone Star Project’s Matt Angle. "A lot of them work in and around the capitol but their hearts and many cases their votes are still in Texas."

The event is also not limited to just Texans or their money.

Ted Cruz Uses Attention From "Faux" Filibuster To Flex Fund-Raising Muscle

New numbers out today show Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was able to turn his 21-hour overnight denunciation of Obamacare into just under $800,000 in contributions for the Ted Cruz Victory Committee, his political action committee.

Austin-based GOP strategist Matt Mackowiak said it’s not abnormal for politicians to use an event like Cruz’s filibuster-like speech to raise campaign dollars.

Kinky Friedman In Field For Agriculture Commissioner

Country music icon, satirist and one-time gubernatorial candidate Richard "Kinky" Friedman has announced his bid for agriculture commissioner in 2014. Friedman will run in the Democratic primary.

The 68 year old said he’s interested in legalizing and regulating marijuana as an agricultural crop to revitalize the Texas farming industry.

This week the Texas political world is buzzing over where Attorney General Greg Abbott -- the perceived GOP front-runner for governor -- stands regarding the issue of providing in-state tuition for students without immigration documentation.

The inquiry into Abbott followed the fallout in the lieutenant governor’s race, where Republican candidates picked each other apart over the issue. At a recent Austin event, Abbott ducked reporters’ questions, saying he was running late and had no time to talk.

Abbott Gets Down To GOP Basics At Realtor Association Campaign Stop

Attorney General Greg Abbott, who is the perceived front-runner on the Republican ticket for governor, spoke to the Texas Association of Realtors in Austin today, asking for their vote. 

Abbott steered away from the women’s issues he focused on during his speech in El Paso on Tuesday, and instead returned to more traditional GOP topics.

"I’m running for governor because I believe that your business and your future should be defined only by the size of your dreams not by the size of your government," Abbott said.

Democrats Forming Senate Strategy With Davis Vacating Seat

Democrats will need to win as many vacant Senate seats as they can to keep Republicans from pushing through legislation if the two-thirds rule is thrown out.
