renewable energy

A solar panel went up in downtown San Antonio on Friday, and it's one that's unlike any other.

"This is an excellent example of combining art and technology, art and science,” said Penny Boyer of the Land Heritage Institute, a 1,200-acre nature preserve that promotes land stewardship and renewable energy. “This is the world's first solar mural installation."

Texas is known for being an energy producing state, but while many still associate the state with oil and natural gas, others are catching up with the state's renewable energy bonanza. Texas is leading the nation in the production of wind power. In fact there's so much wind power being generated at night that one energy company, TXU, has created a program to provide free electricity to consumers who sign up for this particular plan.

But that plan does have considerably higher priced electricity metered during the daytime.

GEORGETOWN — A Central Texas city will be among the first in the U.S. to get its electricity exclusively from solar and wind energy.

SunEdison, which makes solar panels and develops power plants, said Wednesday that it is building a 150-megawatt solar farm in West Texas to serve the municipal utility of Georgetown, about 30 miles north of Austin. That’s enough to supply about half the city’s residents, and the rest of the electricity will come from wind.
