San Fernando Cathedral Like You've Never Seen It

What they’re doing to San Fernando Cathedral tonight will make you see it in a whole new light. Light -- that’s the key word here. Lots and lots of light.

"It’s a video painting of the cathedral," said Xavier de Richemont, who is the one projecting light, pictures, images, and textures onto San Fernando Cathedral. The film, of sorts, is called "San Antonio|The Saga," a chronological telling of the San Antonio story.

"I’m a storyteller telling stories from history," said Richemont. "The Indians, the Comanches and the Spanish coming and the missions being constructed."

San Fernando Public Art Project Seeking County Funds

The Main Plaza Conservancy is asking Bexar County to contribute to the funding for a visual art exhibit coming to the San Fernando Cathedral.

Officials hope the artwork will become a national attraction, and have gone to Bexar County commissioners to ask for their support of the project's ongoing maintenance.

Father David Garcia is the director of the Old Spanish Missions, but it was in his additional capacity as a board member of the Main Plaza Conservancy that he went to commissioners to seek support for a new public art project on the plaza.

San Antonio Symphony Presents Baroque In The Historic San Fernando

The San Fernando Cathedral in downtown San Antonio was founded in 1731 and is the oldest continually functioning religious community in Texas.

The San Fernando Cathedral is one of San Antonio’s most iconic and most storied buildings and when the San Antonio Symphony matched a special event to the building, a hit was created.

"It was so popular last year, especially in the San Fernando Cathedral, where the music matches the building," said San Antonio Symphony Associate Conductor Akiko Fujimoto.

"The cathedral was built during the Baroque period in the mid 18th century," she said.

The music the pared-down symphony of about 22 players will be playing is all baroque, as Fujimoto details.

Video: World-Class Light/Video Installation Coming To Main Plaza

The San Fernando Cathedral will be awash in color and light as French artist Xavier de Richemont brings his installation to San Antonio.

Arriving next year is a 15-minute installation by French artist and world-renown painter Xavier de Richemont. The art video will be projected onto the façade of San Fernando Cathedral, with 7,000 square feet of light, color and visual narration.

The video offers the historical journey through the settlement of San Antonio and Bexar County, and is Main Plaza’s first outdoor video/art project.
