  Furloughs began Monday for 23,000 Department of Defense employees at Joint Base San Antonio as part of the government’s sequestration measure to tighten the federal budget.

About 700,000 total Department of Defense employees will be taking one day a week off for the next 11 weeks -- the government reduced the furloughs from the original 22 days.

Joint Base San Antonio’s Brent Boller said the military could not avoid the cutbacks entirely, despite other efforts to reduce military expenses:

The effects of federal budget cuts known as sequestration have scientists and medical researchers worried that funding will start to be cut.

Research and medical discoveries depend on a plentiful supply of money, but if lawmakers in Washington, D.C. slash funding, research can’t be conducted.

Federal sequestration has claimed another community outreach program from the military as the Department of Defense has grounded the Blue Angels for the remainder of 2013.

Based in Pensacola, Fla., the Flight Demonstration Squadron was preparing for its next scheduled show in Corpus Christi this weekend when the Navy put out the word that shows for the rest of the year are canceled.
