After SXSW, "WOLF" Leads The Pack At Dallas International Film Festival

On the heels of a sold-out debut at Austin’s South By Southwest Film Festival last month, Ya’Ke Smith’s debut feature, “WOLF,” screens at the Dallas International Film Festival this weekend. The taut, emotional drama is about a family struggling to come to grips with their son’s sexual abuse at the hands of their church pastor.

SXSW 2012: Delhi 2 Dublin

The electronic dance music group Delhi 2 Dublin is based in Canada, and formed six years ago. The group’s name implies a fusion of Indian and Irish music, but Tarun Nayar, one of the members, says “over the last two years we’ve become a lot less concerned about trying to make everything Irish and Indian.

SXSW 2012: Marianne Dissard

Marianne Dissard was born in France, and even though she lives now in Tucson, Arizona. She has been a filmmaker, a performance artist and is presently a writer, blogger and singer. Although she’s been working in English more and more often, Dissard found recently that hip hop beats work especially well with her native tongue. “It’s got that innate rhythm to it,” she says.

SXSW 2012: Longital

Longital are a couple from Slovakia, and 2012 was their third experience at South By Southwest. Although both members are accomplished professionals from the world of math and computer science, they’re making their mark in the musical world through tours in Europe and America.

In this interview, Deirdre Saravia talks to the duo about their travels, as well as the inspiration behind some of their best songs, including “Dragon Clouds.”

SXSW 2012: A Feral Child, Roaming Texas in "Kid-Thing"

Austin-based directors Nathan and David Zellner's dark fable, "Kid-Thing," screens at South By Southwest after playing the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. In the film, young Annie (Sydney Aguirre) roams the countryside of East Texas aimlessly, casually shoplifting, throwing objects at passing cars, and enjoying her freedom, while her father lays about on the couch.

SXSW 2012: 'Tchoupitoulas,' a Portrait of New Orleans by Night

Following their acclaimed documentary "45635," Bill and Turner Ross headed south to New Orleans, filming the city almost exclusively at night. "Tchoupitoulas" follows three brothers as they experience what Turner Ross calls a "surreal Pleasure Island."

Tchoupitoulas” is unique in its depiction of the Crescent City. The joyousness and weariness of downtown New Orleans is presented with equal measure. “These aren’t issue-based films,” Turner Ross explains. “It’s portraiture, really, and experience.”

In "Heimkommen (Coming Home)," a young girl and her brother both deal with the loss of a loved one in very different ways. The film was shot in Germany, where director Micah Magee has been based for the past ten years.

SXSW 2012: Student Filmmaker Maqui Gaona, "Burn Spark"

Senior Maqui Gaona is enrolled in the Digital Video program at St. Mary’s Hall. Her film “Burn Spark” will screen as part of the Texas High School Shorts program at SXSW this week.  The short film is set in a world where people are programmed to fall in love with only one other person.

“I kind of got the idea from lots of different interpretations of what it means to instantly connect with someone,” she says.

"Natural Selection," A Dark Comedy That Lit Up SXSW

"Natural Selection," shot in Smithville with a Texas crew, won a total of six awards at the South By Southwest 2011 Film Festival, including the Grand Jury Prize and the audience pick for Best Narrative Feature.

The movie is a dark comedy about a woman (Rachael Harris) who goes searching for answers when she finds her husband's been keeping secrets from her — including fathering a son (Matt O’Leary).
