Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) want to be on your radar this weekend, and here's why: They're
looking for a few good boys and girls.

“We’re going to be hearing auditions for next year’s orchestras at YOSA," said Troy Peters, YOSA’s music director.

“We expect that by the end of auditions that we will have heard from almost 500 young musicians," he said.

The auditions are distinctly not like "American Idol."

Symphony And YOSA Team Up To Tackle Dvorak's 'Serenade For Strings'

Many classical music organizations are participating in the city-wide Dvořák Festival, and the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio are doing so too. YOSA Music Director Troy Peters has the lowdown.

"We are working with the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio and also with musicians from the San Antonio Symphony" he explained. "So we’ll have a string orchestra of students and professionals playing together, playing the great Dvořák 'Serenade for Strings.' And then we’re also going to do a nice little set of choral music with the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio."

Youth Orchestras Of San Antonio Looking To Do Más For Area Kids

The Youth Orchestras of San Antonio YOSA have created a new program that could change young peoples’ lives. Music director Troy Peters characterizes their general purpose this way.

"YOSA is devoted to changes kids’ lives through music and we do that primarily through opportunities to play in large musical ensembles," Peters says.

The new program is called YOSA Más and allows young people of lesser means to join the orchestra despite not having the money needed. The program is being handled through the Edgewood School District.

YOSA Wins National Award For Programming

The Youth Orchestras of San Antonio are receiving the ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming today in St. Louis at the League of American Orchestras Conference.

The award rewards programs that challenge the audience, build the repertoire, and increase interest in contemporary music.

Troy Peters is the music director of YOSA and said new music is a vital element in their effort to give students and audiences exciting musical experiences. Next month YOSA leads their annual summer camp.

Auditions Open For Youth Orchestra Musicians

This week local youth can audition for the 2013-14 season of the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio. Musicians who have been playing their instrument at least one year, and are ages 8 to 20 years old are eligible.

Troy Peters is the music director and conductor of the YOSA Philharmonic. He says it is a great experience, and fun. "This year guests include Christopher O'Riley, host of From The Top, plus Tracy Silverman, electric violinist, and our first performance in Lila Cockrell Theater."

Call YOSA, Maybe? Pop Up Event Highlights Lighter Side of Orchestra

Troy Peters has arranged and organized contemporary tunes for fundraiser

Saturday night Radius becomes much more than offices and a restaurant; the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio will transform the space to an orchestral club. "And the idea is that we just show up with an orchestra in various places, and we've memorized a song, we've worked out an arrangement together, and we sing and play songs that people aren't used to orchestral musicians perform," says Music Director Troy Peters.

Peters Conducts Triple Doubles - New Bridge Records Features YOSA Music Director

The new CD "Triple Doubles" presents three recent double concertos - works composed for violinist Jaime Laredo and cellist Sharon Robinson. Performed by the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, these performances have a remarkably personal quality, undoubtedly a result of the performers' close relationship with the composers and the unique bond of a husband and wife interacting with "their" orchestra. 

Troy Peters, who conducts Daron Hagen’s Masquerade, spoke with John Clare about this release.
