Black Violin, it's the Florida band which has staked out the unlikely intersection of hip hop and classical music. Band member Wilner Baptiste (Wil B) spoke to TPR about the band's outreach efforts in high schools.
"It's something that is very dear to our hearts because we understand," Baptiste said. "We were in a performing arts school that actually had an orchestra."
Baptiste talked about his Fort Lauderdale high school years where, due to budget cuts, he nearly missed being able to learn violin.

Each season, Camerata San Antonio features one player in concert for the "Camerata Recital." This year will be the first for co-founder Emily Watkins-Freudigman, who will play music by Benjamin Britten, Darius Milhaud, Robert Schumann, and Sergei Prokofiev.
Friday night sees four new works by Darian Thomas at the Radius Center in San Antonio.
It will include "Rant" - for solo viola with Jill Van Gee; "St. Anthony's Trio" - For string trio with Thomas, Darryl Tolliver, and Luke Bonecutter; "Juli-o" - For solo cello and rapper, featuring Luke Bonecutter and Derwin Mello Pokell Bios; and "The British Quartet."
Viola is the middle voice of the string family and is often considered more mellow than the violin. At Texas Lutheran University, Eliza Thomason leads the string department, teaching strings and conducting the student orchestra. This Sunday she'll be joined by Dr. Eric Daub in music by Bach, Schumann, Joan Tower and Rebecca Clarke.
The recital is free and open to the public. Sunday, November 11, at 4 p.m. in Wupperman Theater in the fine arts building on the TLU campus.
