The artist known as Yuna joins Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson to talk about her U.S. tour, her new album “Nocturnal” and how her belief in Islam factors into her music and what she wears when she performs.


AUDIE CORNISH, BYLINE: The South African all-male group Ladysmith Black Mambazo became world-famous after collaborating with Paul Simon on the Grammy-winning 1986 album "Graceland." Since their beginning in the '60s, the group has recorded more than 50 albums and won multiple awards. Their new release is a remembrance for one of their own, the late wife of the group's bandleader. It's called "Always With Us." Banning Eyre has this review.

I first heard of Kal when they played at the 2008 International Accordion Festival in San Antonio, where they were greeted with wild enthusiasm. Formed in Belgrade in 2001, Kal is led by Dragan Ristic. The objective of the group is to promote the Romany culture, a subject increasingly taught in schools in Europe.

Last year at Austin’s South By Southwest Festival, a muscular, shy young man with a fairly pronounced sunburn arrived for an interview with me.

Asgeir Trausti had recently arrived from a howling storm in Iceland. He shared a video on his cell which confirmed the conditions-- all dark skies and driving snow. On that same day, Austin was experiencing a fairly typical spring day, with warm temperatures, clear blue skies and gorgeous sunshine. It all went to Asgeir’s head--and his face, and his arms,which were glowing pink!

How do you build on the reputation that has made your band the most visible ambassador of an entire people? For its seventh international album, Emmaar, Tinariwen has some striking ideas that were born out of both creativity and absolute necessity.
