Activists are gathering steam to protest Donald Trump’s private fundraising event in San Antonio next Friday. Dozens attended a meeting last night at the Southwest Worker’s Union.
Members of the media were not allowed inside Thursday’s planning meeting. Representatives for the Southwest Worker’s Union said that was because they were planning strategy for the protest . Denise Hernandez is an activist with the group.
“Our goal is to show San Antonio is united in a front. That, again, we don’t support hate, that we support each other in this, and we’re going to continue working to build after this election better communities.”
According to media reports, Trump is expected to speak at a private luncheon at the Oak Hills Country Club where guests are reportedly paying thousands of dollars for a seat. Trumps many comments about immigrants and people of foreign heritage have ignited a fire under these activists.
Other anti-Trump protests around the county have been confrontational and disruptive.
Hernandez said this one would be peaceful.
“We’re trying to this in an artsy way, I think the best revenge is through something artistic. And so we’re trying to do piñatas, music, people want to dance and stuff, and just show the culture of San Antonio -- how rich it is -- and everything Donald Trump says is incorrect.”
Hernandez says she has been in touch with the San Antonio Police Department asking for help in maintaining order.
