Alan Cumming Bringing 'Sappy Songs' To San Antonio

He's one of the most prolific and varied talents in show business today.  Whether you know him from PBS...

"I'm Alan Cumming and this is Masterpiece Mystery..."

...or from X-Men...

"I play Nightcrawler, who is this blue mutant..."

...or from The Good Wife.

"You're?"

"Eli Gold."

...Alan Cumming is one of the most versatile talents working. And now he's singing what he calls Sappy Songs and touring with a small ensemble.

There's a few videos from Sappy Songs on YouTube and the show sounds really intimate. Was it tough to debut?

"It was very, very, very nerve wracking. And I find that performing as myself is more nerve wracking than performing as a character, definitely."

He's bringing the Sappy Songs show to the Majestic Theatre on June 26. But his original debut of the show was downright crazy.

"I opened this show on Tuesday, and then on that Sunday I was hosting the Tony Awards. It was a very stressful time."

Cumming has done just about everything on stage and screen, so I asked him what was left to do. He laughed.

"I don't sort of yearn for things. I actually find sometimes that you waste so much time looking into the future and imagining and hoping for something to happen that you miss out on what is in your present. I've pretty much done all the things I kinda ever thought I would."

Which is to say he's pretty well checked off his bucket list at the ripe old age of 51.
