Ballet San Antonio’s production of "The Nutcracker" is still months away from its first performance, but here's something parents should note:
“This Saturday, August 23 we’ll have 'The Nutcracker' children’s auditions,” said Ballet San Antonio President Courtney Barker.
“Auditions will be held starting at 12 p.m. They’re going to be held at the Ballet Conservatory of South Texas, which is at 5200 Broadway," she said.
I noted to her that it has got to be a big deal for a young dancer to be a part of a large production like this.
“Yes, it’s a great opportunity for little dancers of all ages because they get to see how the professional dancers work, all the behind the scenes," said Barker. "And they’re dancing to live music and we are the only 'Nutcracker' in town that has live music."
As to what kind of roles are up for grabs, she details them.
"They’ll be auditioning for different roles ranging from little angels to soldiers, mice, candy canes, party girls, and the coveted role of Clara," she said.
What can parents expect the audition to be like?
“We always want the children to come properly dressed, which is the leotard and tights and shoes and hair in a bun for girls, and they’ll just go in and learn some steps from the choreography and then they’ll be released and we’ll let everyone know within 48-72 hours," Barker said. "The casting will be posted on our web site."
This will be the first year for Ballet San Antonio to perform "The Nutcracker" in the Tobin. Barker said she is stoked about the new venue.
“We are so excited to bring our 'Nutcracker' to the Tobin Center, with a brand new dance floor," Barker said. "So we expect our dancers to be jumping extra high, and just bring that magic to the beauty of the Tobin Center.”
So, what is it about "The Nutcracker" that has fascinated kids for the last 120 years?
“It’s just such a magical experience," Barker said. "I mean, the whole production is about magic, about a dream. It’s a holiday tradition and it’s really great for families."
