BBB: Be Careful When Hiring Contractors To Help With Tornado Clean-up

If you’re dealing with storm damage to your home or property you don’t want to fall victim to a scam.  Contractors are out and about in San Antonio willing and ready to help people recover from the recent storm.
While most are legitimate, Miguel Segura with the Better Business Bureau says there are those just trying to take advantage of unsuspecting homeowners.
“If it’s somebody going from door to door, take a look at what vehicle they’re driving. Is it a company car? Is it a personal car? Ask for business cards. Ask for a copy of the contract. You can find all of the pertinent business information: phone number, physical address, website, and take the time to go back inside, do your research, go online. You can do a simple online search.”
He says it’s normal for contractors to ask for a down payment or some sort of advanced payment so they can start purchasing materials.  But if they're asking for a large sum or a complete payment, that's an immediate red flag.
