Bernal, Unopposed, Celebrates First Term & Focuses On The Future

He is the only council member unopposed, and instead of holding a re-election effort, District 1 Councilman Diego Bernal held a thank you celebration.

"A lot of our success is the product of us working hand-in-hand with neighbors, and so it's a chance for me to thank them for working with us," he said Saturday.

Bernal hosted a community party at popular burger spot Chris Madrid's, and offered people the chance to get their t-shirts screen printed with his logo, which was created by local artist Cruz Ortiz.

Introducing him was former Congressman Charlie Gonzalez - now Chief of Public Engagement for VIA - who talked about Bernal's return to San Antonio after college.

"He came back home because that was his first love and what he felt was his first responsibility and obligation," said Gonzalez emphatically, "and that's called public service."

Bernal, mentioning his first two years, mostly focused on the future.

"That's what the next two years is going to be about is to continue to chip away at the things that hold our community back, chip away at the things that maybe could be improved," he said.

"There's no victory lap. We were working on Friday; we'll get back to work on Monday," Bernal said.
