Next week the city will celebrate Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, but this weekend residents can get a taste for the festivities at several events around the Alamo City.
One family-friendly event is being hosted by the City of San Antonio and will include a cultural lesson in what the day is all about and the altars that people make to honor their loved ones who have died.
“Families can learn about the significance of Dia de los Muertos,” says Debbie Racca-Sittre, the interim director of the city’s Department of Arts and Culture. “There’s kind of a hands-on how to create the altars including the papel picado. It’s more of a celebration of the life of the person that’s passed on.”
The workshops will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Nov. 5th at Centro de Artes, located at 101 S. Santa Rosa. There’s also an exhibit of altars created by local artists that will remain on display in the gallery through Nov. 27. It’s all free and open to the public.
