First Public Glimpse At Proposed Market-Commerce Route For Downtown Streetcar

VIA will unveil one of the newest proposed routes at a public meeting tonight. The plans would have the transportation system's streetcar traveling east-west down Commerce and Market Streets, and would provide connections to people at a number of stops along the popular thoroughfares.

VIA Spokesman Charlie Gonzalez says the route addition actually came about as a result of public input from one of the early meetings.

"In particular, one individual who's been advocating -- he's an architect here in San Antonio -- who simply said that route will have the greatest number of riders, hit the hotels, hit the major destination points," Gonzalez explained.

Gonzalez said other individuals have also pushed for more direct east-west routes.

The additional route will be added to the three other routes to be considered at tonight's public meeting. Gonzalez says the board is still on track to make a decision on the route  by the end of August.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight at Temple Beth-el, 211 Belknap St. near San Antonio College.
