In the race for the Texas House District 120, Democrat Barbara Gervin-Hawkinsis headed to Austin representing San Antonio’s East Side.
She beat incumbent Laura Thompson who had been elected after long-time representative Ruth Jones McClendon stepped down from the office.
Gervin-Hawkins said she believes her district is poised for more economic development and she hopes to be a catalyst for positive change.
She also wants to tackle some tough issues like the crime rate.
"I want to work on the criminal justice issue," Gervin-Hawkins stressed. "As you know, District 120 has had some challenges in relation to crime and community folks’ relationship with law enforcement. I want to fix that."
Gervin-Hawkins said the black caucus has already reached out to her, as well as the Bexar County delegation and representatives from the Rio Grande Valley, so she hopes to be able to build some coalitions in Austin.
Gervin-Hawkins is the younger sister of former Spurs player George “Ice Man” Gervin.
