It's Christmas Time In The City: Holiday Schedules & Tree Recycling

City of San Antonio

You may be trying to catch up on a few last minute things this weekend and not had time to check, so here is a list of city services that will have alternate schedules for the holidays. City Hall and most municipal offices will be closed Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 through Tuesday, Jan. 1. but emergency services like SAPD and SAFD will be open.

Trash Collection:

Your collection will only be affected if your normal pickup day is Christmas day (Tuesday) or New Years' Day (also Tuesday); in both cases trash will be collected the following day on Wednesday, Dec. 26 and Wednesday, Jan 2 respectively.

A reminder not to bag your recyclables. Throw your wrapping paper and cardboard in the blue recycling bins loose, and on the wrapping paper note: only non-metallic gift wrap is recyclable. Here is a list of other recycling do's and don'ts.

San Antonio's Solid Waste Management Division is online at: www.sanantonio.gov/SWMD

VIA transit:

  • Monday, Dec. 24: Buses will run on the "Saturday" schedule (see route maps)
  • Tuesday, Dec. 25: Buses will run on the "Sunday" schedule. The VIA information phone line will also be closed along with all information centers.
  • Monday, Dec. 31: Buses will run on the "Saturday" schedule
  • Tuesday, Jan. 1: Buses will run on the "Sunday" schedule

VIA bus route schedules are online at: www.viainfo.net/BusService/Schedules.aspx

San Antonio Water System:

SAWS will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas day, but the emergency line will be open should you need to call. That number is 210-704-7297.

Christmas Tree Recycling

The EPA estimates that about 33 million live Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year, and though some people are still shocked that anyone would put a live tree in their house, several environmental groups applaud the sustainable nature of the industry.

Christmas tree farmers are constantly planting new trees, old trees are recycled for mulch and many farmers give people who buy their trees a seedling for them to plant at home.

Drop off your Christmas tree at any one of the city's locations January 5, 6 and 12, 13 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. where it will be recycled into mulch.

Emergencies:

As always, emergency services like San Antonio Police Department and Fire Departments will be working during the holidays. If you do have an emergency, call 9-1-1.

My journalism journey began with an idea for a local art and music zine and the gumption to make it happen with no real plan or existing skill set.
