One of San Antonio’s largest school districts has signed a memorandum of understanding with the city on the Pre-K 4 SA program.
The San Antonio Independent School district’s board of trustees unanimously approved the partnership with the city last night. SAISD Spokeswoman Leslie Price said the agreement will be the framework between the district, city, and Texas Education Agency:
"Everything from how much per student the district would contribute, to the city’s responsibilities, and it really spells out what this partnership is," Price said. "We also see it as a living document where we can make changes and continue to work on it as the program progresses because this is really just the first step in getting this in place."
Per the agreement, SAISD would give the city $3,200 for every student using Pre-K 4 SA. SAISD has about 5,000 children in both its pre-K and Head Start programs at its campuses and early childhood centers.
If all of the city’s school districts participate in Pre-K 4 SA about 215 SAISD students could enroll in the city’s program, according to the district. There are about 225 on an SAISD waiting list for either pre-K or Head Start.
Under the city’s Pre-K 4 SA program, two additional learning centers run by the city will be available to accept students. As the program expands, two more learning centers will be opened in the following year.
