The San Antonio Food Bank has been named one of the top 10 charities in the nation based on financial health, transparency and accountability, and results. Watchdog group Charity Navigator named it one of its "10 Top-Notch Charities."

The recognition honors the food bank's work in using best practices and high ethical standards in its mission to serve 58,000 people each week in South Central Texas. Making the list could mean big news for the food bank in the future as it continues to serve the community.

President Eric Cooper agrees the list is a good one to be on as funders decide how to best spend their money.

"When you have a third-party endorsement that says if you're going to make a donation and you want to invest in a nonprofit that follows the highest levels of integrity and stewardship, and has community impact, then I think it does sway donors that want to make an investment," said Cooper.

Two weeks ago the food bank celebrated its warehouse addition of 106,000 square feet, allowing more space to store donated items and therefore serve more people. Cooper said his team keeps the mission in mind everyday not to win awards, but to make a difference.

Mayor Julián Castro praised Cooper and the food bank for maintaining the high standard that brought the organization, and the city, this recognition.

"It is wonderful to see our San Antonio Food Bank, under the leadership of Eric Cooper, recognized as one of the most responsible and effective nonprofits in the United States," said Castro.

Castro said the honor is only fitting because of the food bank's professionalism, service and humility to the public.
