Shedding Light On Beauty And The Beast's "Lumiere"

It was a huge hit in the movie theater, in the Broadway Theater, and now it’s coming back to San Antonio.
If you’ve seen it, surely you remember this scene (click "listen" above to hear the scene).

"Ma chère mademoiselle! It is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure that we welcome you tonight. And now, we invite to relax, let us pull up a chair, as the dining room proudly presents: your dinner!"

That’s Patrick Pevehouse, who plays the iconic Lumiere in "Beauty and the Beast" and his return to San Antonio is delightfully coincidental.

“I actually saw 'Beauty and the Beast' in San Antonio when it first came. I just remember how beautiful the production was and how much I wanted to be a part of it.”

Pevehouse is from Dallas, and went to school in Oklahoma City. Since 2011, he's been living in New York.

I noted to him that it seems that he'd done the Broadway dream that so many try and fail at. I asked him how that feels. He said it felt great, and for others to remember one thing:

“Perseverance is key. There’s going to be ninety-nine 'no’s' before you reach a 'yes,' and reaching that yes is the best feeling in the world, and such a feeling of accomplishment.”

"Beauty and the Beast" is coming to San Antonio’s Majestic Theater on September 30th through October 5th. Pevehouse says he's ready.

“I’m really excited to play San Antonio where I first saw it.”

I asked him to dig down a bit on Lumiere, for those who hadn't seen the play.

“Yes, of course. Lumiere is just your very stereotypical French maître d', who fancies himself a ladies man.”

When he saw the original production here in San Antonio he set his sights on that particular role.

“I remember watching Lumiere and thinking ‘gosh, that’s me!’”

He said it was amazing to set his sights on that goal, and to actually attain it.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m really glad it worked out that way. I really couldn’t ask for anything better.”
