The Source: Johnny Hernandez On His Life In Food

From tacos that cost 39 cents to serving the first family in the White House, Chef Johnny Hernandez has come a long way since he worked in his family's restaurant as a child.

The chef and restaurateur owns and manages the kitchens of several San Antonio staples, including La Gloria and El Machito. In fact, it was in latter restaurant that a friend who works at the White House told him he would submit Johnny's name to be a guest chef.

That paid off when last week Chef Hernandez served among other things tacos to the eater-in-chief President Barack Obama, his family, and about 500 others.

We talk with Chef Hernandez about his life in food, what San Antonio has to offer the culinary world, what getting your knives past White House Security is like, and what comes next.
