The Source: Is 'Puro' San Antonio’s Cultural Trademark?

What images come to mind when you think of the words "puro " and "San Antonio"?

There are layers of meaning and understanding that get to the heart of the city, according to organizers of a Puro Symposium happening tonight at Brick at Blue Star Arts Complex. They're encouraging a citywide dialogue about our art, food, history, culture, literature and more.

"Though 'puro' defies categorization and is ubiquitous to San Antonio, this one-day symposium aims to recover what makes and shapes it and how this might translate into architecture," says Dr. Antonio Petrov, an assistant professor in the College of Architecture, Construction and Planning at the University of Texas at San Antonio who is helping organize the event.

"Through the lens of art, music, graffiti, performance, religion, cultural history, film, social media, TV, philosophy and literature, we hope to explore values, attitudes and cultural sensibilities, and how they inform the relationship between the social and the physical shaping of our city."
