Texas State Rep. Laura Thompson has been released on bond after turning herself into San Antonio police Thursday.
Lisa Jackson, a spokeswoman for Thompson's re-election campaign, says Thompson received an anonymous tip that she was going to be arrested for an outstanding warrant on a family violence charge from 2012 .
Jackson says Rep. Thompson was unaware that a warrant existed and she questions why the issue emerged right before the election.
“She’s not hiding from anybody. She’s been in office since August the 2nd of 2016 out in public doing the people’s business. If there was an arrest warrant for her why was that not served August the 2nd? Why was it not served in 2013? Or 2014? Or 2015?”
Thompson is an independent in House District 120 which includes San Antonio’s East Side. Thompson won a special election in August to replace the retiring Ruth Jones McClendon. Thompson has one opponent in November, Democrat Barbara Gervin Hawkins.
