Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is causing a stir at the capitol after issuing a list of things he’d like to see during a special session.
Dewhurst said there are several key items that he felt lawmakers should have been able to address this session:
- A constitutional spending cap bill
- Campus carry bill
- Bill to require welfare recipients to be drug tested
- Passage of a fetal-pain abortion bill
"The fact of the matter is that every one of those issues has gone through the process this session," said Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Wroth. "To bring us back outside the two-thirds rule, which is intent for a special session, is to ram through a partisan agenda for purposes only to put a feather in his partisan hat."
Davis said this session has been filled with divisive items that both Democrats and Republicans have worked through and found a compromise, but Dewhurst is simply working on his next political campaign while looking to spend taxpayer dollars by asking to call lawmakers back.
Davis said Dewhurst is twisting the rules by re-introducing these bills during a special session that will be meant to address redistricting.
She said if that happens the legislation will not require a two-thirds majority to pass.
