The Department of Public Safety has confirmed that the Texas Rangers are conducting a criminal investigation of allegations involving Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sidney Miller.
The DPS says the Rangers are trying to determine whether Miller violated state statutes by abusing his official capacity as an elected official.
The investigation follows a complaint filed by the non-profit watchdog group Progress Texas. Progress Texas requested an investigation after news media reported the agriculture commissioner used state funds to pay for a trip to Oklahoma where he allegedly received an injection for pain which has been called the “Jesus shot.”
Progress Texas has asked the Rangers to expand that investigation to determine whether Miller also used taxpayer money to pay for a trip to Mississippi to compete in a rodeo.
The DPS says once the Rangers have completed their investigation of Miller, the findings will be sent to the Travis County District Attorney’s Office.
