Tobin Throws Itself A 1-Year-Old Party And You're Invited

It’s coming up on a year since the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts opened. It was a highly anticipated element in San Antonio’s positioning of itself as a city on the rise. And the city's residents seem to have embraced it in that first year.

"We’ve had fantastic attendance. We’ve had over 250,000 people come through the building in the past year. The Tobin Center opened on September 4th of last year. And we’re celebrating with a community-wide open house on Sunday, August 30th from 2 to 5," said the Tobin's Christopher Novosad.

If you’re one of those who hasn’t made it to the Tobin, here’s your opportunity to see the building. And Novosad says it’s not going to set you back a lot.

"Absolutely. 100% free. All ten of our resident companies will also be there. The [San Antonio] Symphony, the Ballet, the Opera—I won’t go through all ten, but those are the top three ones—they’ll all be there talking about their new season. You can ask them questions one on one.  We will have performers there from the Ballet in their Nutcracker costumes and their Swan Lake costumes so kiddos will be able to see costumes up close and interact with those folks."

Novosad says the San Antonio Symphony will be there with their instrument petting zoo.

"So it’s an opportunity for kids and adults to get up close and personal as well as talk to symphony players as well as look at an instrument up close.”

Also scheduled: little pop-up concerts, Clifford the Big Red Dog and free street parking downtown. They’re also offering specials on tickets for the ten resident companies at the Tobin during the three-hour open house. Oh, and one more thing...

"We will have cupcakes as birthday cakes for the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, and the public is invited."

Here's more on the Tobin Center's open house celebration.
