The University of Texas at San Antonio has received a million dollar grant to provide computer science scholarships to women and students of color.

The five-year $999,350 grant from the National Science Foundation allows UTSA to award student scholarships of up to $10,000 a year based on financial need.

Associate computer science professor Turgay Korkmaz, the grant’s program director, said the goal is to increase diversity in science and technology careers.

“Helping high achieving but financially disadvantaged students to join the workforce and close the gaps is going to be a great contribution to the country, and them as well,” Kortmaz said.

The UTSA scholarship program also includes tutoring and faculty mentorship to help students succeed.

The program is currently accepting applications, and plans to award the first 10 scholarships this fall.
