UTSA To Collaborate With Japan On Astronomy

The University of Texas at San Antonio and The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan will sign an agreement to collaborate in all aspects of astronomy, including the building of a Thirty Meter Telescope, which will be one of the largest ever built.
 
Chris Packham, UTSA associate professor of astronomy, will lead a team of American and Japanese scientists in building instruments for the historic telescope, to be completed within the next decade.
 
He will also work to further internationalize UTSA’s campus by exchanging scientists and graduate students with Japan to aid in top-tier research efforts, including work to better understand the nature of distant galaxies.
 
As to the location of the massive telescope: either the Canary Islands or Hawaii.
