UTSA Students Register Voters for November General Election

Just in time for National Voter Registration Day, local university students came together to encourage fellow students to register and to vote while they are residing in Bexar County.

UTSA Professor Patricia Jaramillo said the first step was training, and the students took the lead in the project:

"Thanks to our external affairs department, we ran two shuttles in August and they were essentially full, from the 1604 campus to the Bexar Elections Department," said Jaramillo. "They managed to get students, staff and faculty all deputized."

Jaramillo said that as of Tuesday, the volunteer deputies had signed up 2,000 new voters on campus, and they expect to get more as publicity continues.

"They teamed with Univision on two different dates for tabling events, both downtown and at 1604, but they have also been invited into the classroom by faculty for just the last five minutes to invites students to get registered to vote,” said Jaramillo.

Today marks the two-week countdown to the Oct. 9 deadline to register to vote in the November general election.
