With all the holiday-themed events scheduled there’s something you may have missed: the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. It's coming to San Antonio, and as extravaganza Producer Cynthia Muñoz said, it’s a week full of special events, and music.
"The Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza is a seven-day mariachi music festival that starts Sunday, December 1 and runs through Saturday, December 7. It’s in its nineteenth consecutive year as the largest and longest-running mariachi music festival in Texas," Muñoz said.
Holiday spending-conscious listeners note that there are over a dozen events, many of which are free. Regarding mariachi music, San Antonio Library Director Ramiro Salazar asks: "How San Antonio can you get?"
The library system has partnered with Mariachi Vargas for performances, workshops and other events.
"We invite all members of the public to take advantage of these programs that we offer" said Salazar about events that are taking place at branch libraries all over the city.
"We have about a thousand students from all over the country that convene each year to participate in the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza," Muñoz said. "We also have workshops on Friday morning over at the convention center."
Then the whole thing culminates with a big performance at the Lila Cockrell and Muñoz said it will be big.
"The concert features winners of mariachi and group vocal competitions that are held prior to the concert."
Muñoz describes those competitions as "the largest and toughest competitions in the country."
Next week San Antonio will be the epicenter for all things mariachi.
