Each week on World Music (Saturday nights from 8-10 on KSTX 89.1 FM), I take a look at celebrations happening around the world. This week, a cheesy festival in England.
COOPER'S HILL CHEESE ROLLING
What some people will do for a bit of cheese! Well perhaps more than a bit, if the cheese in question weighs about eight pounds. The annual Cheese Roll Competition in Gloucestershire, England takes place on Monday, May 27. Hundreds of competitors are broken into small groups so that they can run down a hillside after a cheese round. The hill is Cooper's Hill, and the hillside has a precipitously steep incline. Running down is not really an option--it’s more a situation of rolling down! The winner is awarded the cheese, which usually remains intact.
You can hear more about this and other celebrations happening around the world every Saturday night on World Music with Deirdre Saravia, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on KSTX 89.1 FM.
