World Music with Deirdre Saravia takes you on a musical journey to some of the world’s most fascinating places. From China to Brazil and the Balkans to Indonesia, World Music will introduce you to sounds from a world far from your own. A world traveler herself, the Belfast, Northern Ireland native introduces each piece with details about the music, the musicians and the culture that produced them.

Saravia credits the work of performers like Peter Gabriel and Paul Simon for bringing world music to the attention of American audiences, but she has also seen a change in attitude in America towards foreigners.

Today foreigners feel more comfortable in celebrating their uniqueness, and as a result, there is a burgeoning interest in world music. "Not understanding the language is no longer a problem," says Saravia. "People enjoy the music for the beat, the instrumentation."

Though each World Music show is built around a central theme, it will rarely center on one type of music. Saravia strives for variety, though there will always be a connection between the songs she plays; music from as many as 15 countries can be represented in the same show.

"You come to learn that people are basically the same throughout the world," she says. "They sing about the same things."

One of the biggest losses in the translation of Latin American culture is Brazilian melancholy. It's more than a casualty of cultural misunderstanding; it's a product of the fetishizing of Brazil and its people, which strips them down to happy, over-sexed, party-hard alternatives to the grim denizens of "developed" nations. Which, in turn, does no justice to the depth and beauty of Brazilians' ongoing struggle: If you take away people's tragedies, you also water down the sheer awesomeness of their victories.

In the early 1990s in Venezuela, a group of young musicians decided to compose and play music unlike any thing they heard in the clubs of Caracas.

Los Amigos' style is described as disco/funk and is definitely dance music. Amazingly, the original line up is unchanged over their twenty years of playing together.

Tokyo-based Kao=S (pronounced 'kaus' - like house) mixes modern acoustic rock guitar riffs with the tsugaru syamisen - a traditional Japanese string instrument - accompanied by the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) and Japanese sword performance.

The band is made up of Kaori (vocal/sword performance), Shuji (guitar/vocal), Jack (tsugaru syamisen and Daisuke (shakuhachi).

"Me and Jack played together in a different [group] and I met Shuji [when] I went to Shuji's live show and I talked to him [and said], 'Let's play together,'" Kaori said.

For his latest album, "In Focus?," Shugo Tokumaru maintained complete control over the creative process and played all the instruments on the recorded disk. In order to perform live, however, he needed some help, and had his band to back him up.

While the band delivered the songs with energy, complete with the subtle textural nuances that give Shugo's songs a little something special, he was visibly focused on the other two musicians during their performance the afternoon of March 14.
