Two local institutions are teaming up for a unique in-exhibit performance. The McNay Museum of Art and the Copperleaf Quintet have got an interesting plan for the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 30.

“We do! Copperleaf is going to be singing at the McNay, in the Stieren Center, for their "Intimate Impressionism" Exhibit."

That's the Copperleaf's Ruth Moreland.

"We’re very excited to be bringing this music to that space. It’s a concert of French Salon Music.”

French music, French art — it sounds like an immersion in Frenchness.

Matisse ends his run at SAMA, but he’s not going away quietly. Rather than let him just slink away, they're throwing a goodbye party.

“The evening is entitled 'au revoir, Matisse,' ” said Ruth Moreland, music director of the Copperleaf Quintet. "And there’ll be all kinds of wonderful things going on at the museum, and Copperleaf will be performing a concert of French salon music in the third floor exhibition gallery, which is where they have all of Matisse’s art books.”

The Copperleaf Quintet is set to close out its season on Sunday. As they've been all season, this concert is thematic.

"May 4 actually happens to be the feast of the forty English martyrs," said Ruth Moreland, the group's founder and artistic director.

"So we’ll do a concert of all English composers," she said. "The first portion of the concert is William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, just some really lovely liturgical motets. Some things in Latin, some things in English. And then the second half will be various pieces of English poetry set to music."

Some of San Antonio's most able musicians play an instrument we all take for granted.

"I can't tell you how many people tell us how, that when they hear our a capella music, it is what they imagine Angels must sound like," said Copperleaf Quintet Artistic Director and singer Ruth Moreland.

Some of the group's new season, which begins September 29, will be performed primarily at the University of the Incarnate Word's Chapel of the Incarnate Word.

San Antonio's vocal chamber group the Copperleaf Quintet, has an afternoon of music for Lent planned this weekend. On the program are works by Francisco Guerrero and Tomas Luis de Victoria.

"His [de Victoria's] lines are just so exquisite, and when they are so exposed by just having one person on a part singing them, it's just a wonderful thing to hear!" said Ruth Moreland, the director and soprano for the group.

Ruth Moreland loves pairing music with art. "There is something about singing in a space and having this art right there. Nothing better for the performers or the audience!" she says.

The Copperleaf Quintet, which Moreland founded and sings in, will set the galleries alive with songs about the Madonna.  San Antonio Museum of Art hosts Copperleaf in the Spanish Colonial Gallery for a concert of Renaissance vocal music reflecting the art in SAMA's current "Rostros de Maria" exhibit.
